Small square hay bales stacked in a paddock
18–28 kg per bale

Small Square Bales

Hand-stackable bales, easy to lift, easy to store, the workhorse of every horse shed and hobby farm.

Small squares are the classic Aussie hay format, 18 to 28 kilos, about a metre long, easy to throw onto a ute or stack three-high in a shed. They're what most horse owners, hobby farmers, smallholders and pet livestock people buy because the maths is simple: one bale, one feed, one easy lift.

Best for

  • Horse owners with one to ten head
  • Hobby farms and smallholdings
  • Goats, alpacas, sheep on small acreage
  • Anyone without a tractor or telehandler

Why they work

  • Easy to handle by hand, no machinery needed
  • Easy to store under a carport or in a shed
  • Quick to break apart and feed out
  • Easy to inspect before you buy

Watch out for

  • Higher per-kilo cost than rounds or large squares
  • More wastage if left out in the paddock
  • Slow to feed out for large herds

Small Square Bales, common questions

How much does a small square hay bale weigh?
Most small squares weigh between 18 and 28 kilos depending on variety and how tightly they're baled. Lucerne tends to be denser (25–28 kg). Oaten and pasture run lighter (18–24 kg). Straw is lighter again at 12–16 kg.
How long does one small square bale last a horse?
An average 500kg horse on full hay (no pasture) will go through about 10 kilos a day, so a single 22kg bale lasts a bit over two days. Most paddocked horses eat half hay, half grass, that doubles bale life.
Can I get small squares delivered?
Yes, we run small-square deliveries across Yass, Canberra, Goulburn, Crookwell, Braidwood and the Snowy region. Minimum loads start at 20 bales for short runs.
