Golden oaten hay bales in a paddock
Oaten Hay · Yass NSW

Sweet, golden, soft-dough oaten hay, the most reliable all-rounder for horses, cattle and sheep.

Oaten hay is our most popular cereal hay, moderate energy, low-to-moderate sugar, and a sweet smell that animals love. We cut at the soft-dough stage to lock in nutrition while keeping the stem soft and palatable. Ideal for horses that founder on lucerne, dry stock, and anyone wanting a safer day-to-day forage.

Why our oaten stands up.

Cut soft, baled tight

Soft-dough cut means soft stems and palatable hay, not the stalky stuff that gets pushed around the feeder.

Tested where it counts

We pull samples from each cut for protein, NDF and sugar. If you need a feed test for a specific batch, ask and we'll arrange it.

Year-round availability

We carry a year-round buffer, no scrambling in winter, no second-rate hay because we ran out of the good stuff.

Oaten Hay: questions buyers ask

What's the difference between oaten hay and wheaten hay?
Oaten hay is cut from oat plants and tends to be sweeter, softer and slightly higher in protein. Wheaten hay is cut from wheat plants and is generally stalkier with less sugar, useful for stock that can't tolerate the sugar in oaten. Most horses prefer oaten.
Is oaten hay safe for laminitic horses?
Oaten is safer than rye or fresh spring pasture, but it's not zero-sugar. For confirmed laminitics, we recommend soaking the hay for an hour before feeding (soaking pulls out roughly 30% of the soluble sugars) and pairing with low-sugar pasture hay. We can supply a feed-test result for any large parcel.
How does oaten hay compare to lucerne for horses?
Lucerne is the protein and calcium powerhouse, great for muscle, growth and lactation. Oaten is the steady, lower-protein staple. Most performance horses do well on a 60/40 oaten/lucerne mix; most easy keepers do well on oaten alone.
Can cattle eat oaten hay?
Yes, oaten is a solid maintenance feed for dry cows and growing cattle, and a good base layer in a finishing ration. For lactating dairy or finishing beef, you'll want to add lucerne or a protein supplement.
