Round hay bales in a paddock at sunrise
250–340 kg per bale

Round Bales

Paddock-feed cattle and sheep, round out, roll out, no shed required.

Round bales are the answer when you've got numbers in a paddock and you don't want to hand-feed every day. One round will feed ten head of cattle for two or three days, and they're built to handle being left in a paddock feeder. We bale 5x4 and 4x4 rounds in lucerne, oaten and pasture, all wrapped or shedded depending on use.

Best for

  • Cattle producers feeding through winter
  • Sheep mobs on lambing or feed crisis
  • Horse properties with multiple paddocks
  • Anyone wanting to ringfeed

Why they work

  • No daily hand-feeding, drop one in a feeder
  • Cost-effective per kilo (between small squares and large squares)
  • Sheds water reasonably if you have to leave them out
  • Easy to load and transport in bulk

Watch out for

  • Need a tractor or hay fork to move
  • More wastage if no ring feeder is used
  • Hard to break apart for small numbers of stock

Round Bales, common questions

How many cattle will one round bale feed?
A 300kg lucerne or oaten round will keep ten beef cattle going for two or three days as a supplement, or feed five to seven head as their sole forage. Feed efficiency improves dramatically with a ring feeder, without one you can lose 30–40% to trampling.
Can I leave round bales out in the paddock?
You can, but you'll lose quality on the outer layer. A wrapped round (silage) is built to live outside. An unwrapped dry round is better if you can stack them under cover or use them within a few weeks. Better still: use a ring feeder.
Do you wrap round bales for silage?
Yes, we can supply wrapped silage rounds in lucerne or oaten on request. Wrapped rounds are heavier (350–450 kg) and shouldn't be opened until you're ready to use them.
